Abstract

Temporary housing is widely used as an immediate response to post-disaster displacement, yet prolonged occupation can transform temporary settlements into de facto permanent residential environments. This study investigates the long-term transformation of temporary housing established following the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake in Algeria and explores an alternative approach to their progressive conversion into permanent and adaptable dwellings. Based on field observations, residential surveys, and an analysis of spontaneous transformations, the study identifies recurrent patterns of extension, enclosure, room addition, and appropriation of spaces beyond the original dwelling boundaries. These transformations reveal both residents’ capacity to adapt their homes and the limitations of the initial temporary units in terms of space, flexibility, and adaptability. Building on these findings, the research proposes a Reverse Post-Occupancy Incremental Housing Model, developed through a Research through Design approach
