Journal History

Street Art & Urban Creativity (SAUC) is an international academic journal dedicated to the study of urban art, visual culture and creative practices. Since its inception, the journal has maintained continuity in its title and scope, while undergoing a process of structural and organizational evolution.

2015 – Journal foundation

The journal was established in 2015 under the title Street Art & Urban Creativity (ISSN: 2183-9956), with the aim of providing an academic platform for research on urban art and related disciplines.

2015–2024 – Initial editorial stage (historical repository)

Between 2015 and 2024, the journal was managed and published under its original editorial structure, based in Portugal and associated with the Urbancreativity initiative.

All issues published during this period are preserved in the journal’s historical repository, available at:

https://journals.wisethorough.com/index.php/sauc/index

This repository is maintained by the entity responsible for the journal during that stage and serves as a permanent archival record of the journal’s initial phase.

The Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) assigned to articles published between 2015 and 2024 are managed by the previous publisher, in accordance with the editorial and technical arrangements in place at that time.

2024–2025 – Transition of ownership and editorial management

In 2024–2025, the journal underwent a formal transition involving:

  • transfer of editorial management
  • change of publishing entity
  • migration to a new publishing platform

Editorial responsibility for the journal was transferred from its original Portuguese management to VisualCOM Scientific Publications (Spain).

As part of this transition:

  • the journal adopted a renewed editorial and governance framework
  • publication processes were reorganized to align with international standards
  • a new publishing environment was implemented

The historical repository (2015–2024) remained under the control of the previous publisher, while the current journal operates independently under its new editorial structure.

From 2025 – Current editorial stage

From 2025 onwards, the journal is fully managed and published by VisualCOM Scientific Publications.

Key characteristics of the current stage include:

  • exclusive digital publication (online-only format)
  • implementation of updated editorial governance and transparency policies
  • strengthened peer review procedures
  • independent management of DOIs for all newly published articles
  • Publish all articles in Spanish and English

All DOIs assigned from 2025 onwards are managed by the current publisher.

Continuity and development

The journal has not undergone any change in title since its creation. However, it has experienced a process of structural evolution in terms of:

  • editorial management
  • publishing platform
  • operational organization

These developments reflect the journal’s ongoing commitment to:

  • improving editorial standards
  • enhancing transparency
  • strengthening international visibility

In particular, the transition to the current editorial model has been aimed at reinforcing governance, streamlining workflows, and ensuring compliance with internationally recognized best practices in scholarly publishing.

Identity and design evolution

As part of this transition, the journal has also introduced a renewed visual identity, distinguishing the current editorial stage from its initial phase, while preserving continuity in its academic scope and mission.

Final note

The journal’s evolution represents a process of consolidation and strengthening. While different editorial stages are clearly documented and preserved, the journal maintains a continuous academic identity and remains committed to long-term quality, integrity and sustainability.
