From drift to the collective imagination
Perceptual maps of Madrid and Barcelona

This article studies the relationship between collective perception, urban imaginaries, and interpretation of the environment, focusing on Madrid and Barcelona. The image of the city is understood as a symbolic exchange between the individual and space, where drifts shape meanings and create alternative ways of moving through it. The research proposes a dynamic recording system aimed at creating maps based on experienced perceptions. The methodology combines participatory observation and a digital tool with automated flow, which organizes the data obtained through walks and incorporates the use of color as a common language to visualize emotions and compare the results of the routes through infographics and cartography. The hybrid technique, between digital and analog, was applied in explorations with university communities. It is concluded that drifting is an effective resource for interpreting urban identity and a pedagogical practice with potential for replication in different contexts.
