Privacy and fundamental rights in the Smart City
The use of Artificial Intelligence in video surveillance systems

This article analyses the social, ethical, and legal implications of the use of Artificial Intelligence in video surveillance systems within the context of smart cities. It addresses several essential concepts, ranging from the notion of the Smart City to the transformation of public safety through Artificial Intelligence-powered surveillance. Current applications such as predictive crime analysis and facial recognition are examined, along with the associated risks, including lack of privacy and transparency. Through the study of various international Smart City models, the article highlights the need for a regulatory framework that ensures the protection of fundamental rights and promotes a Smart City model that balances technological development with legal and democratic principles.
