Evolution, processes and challenges in major Spanish cities

Urban peripheries have undergone substantial transformations over time, evolving from marginal and functional spaces to complex territories integrated into metropolitan dynamics. This article analyzes the evolution, urban processes, and current challenges that characterize the outskirts of three major Spanish capitals: Madrid, Valencia, and Zaragoza. Using a comparative approach, it identifies the common elements and local specificities that have determined the peripheral configuration of each city. The study is based on the analysis of historical sources, urban planning, statistical data, and territorial observation, with the aim of contributing to a critical and up-to-date understanding of the role of peripheries in the contemporary urban structure.
