Abstract

This article presents the design phase of the platform #PinchaLaBurbuja, an environment aimed at fostering critical media literacy through the use of generative artificial intelligence, with the goal of promoting critical agency in postdigital contexts. The proposal introduces three key innovations: GPT-based cyborgs developed using agent prompting techniques and RAG architecture, grounded in the principles of affective polarization, post-truth, and virality; a critical reformulation of inoculation theory; and the discursive evaluation of AI as an educational actor. Employing a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach, the study analyzes emerging patterns, the application of critical inoculation, and the pedagogical self-awareness of the cyborgs. The results reveal epistemic contrast patterns, bias reduction, and argumentative refutation, alongside areas for improvement in gamification and traceability.

I am currently a predoctoral researcher working on the thesis “PinchaLaBurbuja: Analysis of Affective Polarization on Social Media and the Development of a Generative AI-Based Tool to Promote Critical Thinking”, supported by an FPI grant. The project evolves from the concept of the echo chamber toward that of affective polarization, the latter encompassing a broader definition that extends from ideological affiliation to the construction of identities based on emotional impact.

PinchaLaBurbuja is a media literacy tool designed to analyze five key dimensions of affective polarization: the manipulation of inferences and cognitive biases, the use of argumentative fallacies, identity-based confrontation, and the spread of hate speech. The proposal is structured around five artificial intelligence agents specialized in the multimodal discourse analysis of social media content. These agents offer a joint, critical interpretation of messages, serving as an educational resource aimed at fostering critical thinking, particularly among high school and university students.

One of the innovative aspects of PinchaLaBurbuja is its ability to turn interpretation errors made by these agents—or cyborgs—into pedagogical opportunities. By analyzing these AI-generated “hallucinations,” students are encouraged to reflect on how automated systems construct narratives, what biases they reproduce, and what interpretive limitations they present.

Rather than diminishing the role of educators, the tool is based on a participatory approach in which teachers play a central role as critical mediators. The initiative adopts the HHAIR (Hybrid Human–AI Regulation) framework, combining technological support for self-regulated learning with critical analysis of the technology itself. In this way, PinchaLaBurbuja promotes a holistic learning experience that connects the understanding of phenomena such as affective polarization and echo chambers with critical AI literacy.
